The Mausoleum of Idris II

March 25, 2026

The mausoleum of Idris II was built during the reign of Moulay Ismail at the beginning of the 18th century and restored in the mid-19th century. It houses the tomb of the Founder in a setting exceptional for both its beauty and its dimensions…

All the narrow streets leading to the sanctuary are blocked by wooden beams that mark the sacred boundaries and forbid pack animals from crossing.

Travelers must stoop to enter the “sacred space”!

It is the most revered holy place for the inhabitants of Fes, but also for those from more distant lands who come seeking “baraka,” God’s blessing.

Each year, in tribute to their founder, the catafalque covering his tomb is renewed, and various craft guilds parade through the medina.

Moulay Idris II thus still watches over his city, in the respect of his subjects and in the magnificence of his mausoleum, which remains the most imposing building in Fes!
