All over the Medina of Fez, you will find small shops offering budget excursions to all the region’s main attractions.
They are inexpensive because they rely on shared collective transport under typical local conditions—meaning rather basic, aging vehicles, drivers who often ignore traffic rules, and minimal comfort.
The business model relies on collecting enough tourists to fill a minibus, starting pick-ups early in the morning—often far too early for the short distance covered—and making multiple stops along the way designed to sell breakfast, lunch, or souvenirs on commission. At the end of the day, you are often dropped off at an unfamiliar spot, leaving you to find your own way back to your riad using Google Maps or asking locals for directions…
On the upside, it is cheap!
Another option is to travel in far better conditions: in comfortable, well-maintained vehicles (not aging minibuses) with complimentary bottled water, free from forced shopping stops, yet happy to pull over whenever you want to snap a photo. You are driven safely to your destination and brought back at a reasonable hour, giving you plenty of time to dine at the riad or enjoy an evening out in town…
It costs more, but the experience is undeniably far superior!
