At the entrance and exit of every city, and often along the roads, visiting drivers will quickly notice a strong police presence across Morocco.
While it is not our place to pass judgment, it is an important reality to highlight, as it differs significantly from European or American countries. The police are present everywhere in Morocco, which undoubtedly contributes to making the country exceptionally safe!
If you are pulled over on the road—most commonly for speeding—never be arrogant or confrontational with officers. Such behavior can easily be misinterpreted, especially since officers may not speak languages other than French or Arabic. The police in Morocco are a highly respected authority, and no one challenges their decisions or provokes them. You can always politely explain yourself—and you should (in French if possible)—but remain calm and courteous. Failing to stop or refusing to comply is absolutely not an option here, as the response will be immediate and strict.
If you have committed a traffic violation, you will be issued a fine to be paid on the spot in cash. You will receive an official signed receipt in return. Above all, never attempt to bribe an officer—doing so will lead to severe consequences far beyond a simple traffic fine!
The Tourist Police is also very active. Incidents targeting visitors are rare, and even when discrete, officers maintain a strong presence in all major tourist areas, including the Medina of Fez.
Should you encounter any issue or dispute as a tourist, reach out to the Tourist Police, who will resolve the situation efficiently. Officers are specifically assigned to protect tourists against scams or unfair practices. An officer is never far away, and any local resident will gladly help you find one if needed.
